31.07.2016, AEGON ARENA NTC – A fantastic handball show! Great fighting performance ultimately was not enough for Norway, as the Republic of Korea earned bronze medals after winning 32:30 (17:16).
Already the first half was exciting. Koreans were in the lead, but Norway turned the game from 4:7 to 9:7 and later also were in front by three goals. The Korean team again reversed the situation in their favor, yet they lost the first half.
There was also some kind of tactical chess – for the most part of the game, the Norwegian coach told his players to mark the Korean playmaker Hyesoo Song and neutralized her in this way for a long time, and the coach of Korea responded to it by sending his goalkeeper to attack.
In the fifth minute of the 2nd half, Norway´s advantage was the biggest (20:16) and it seemed like they had yet more power. But – never underestimate the tenacious Koreans! Their will and mental strength have no limits, and this game fully showed it. Only a few minutes passed, and the Asian team were already in front 22:21. Then their lead increased to three goals, and even though Norway in the end reduced to 30:31, the bronze medals ultimately went to the Republic of Korea.
Vigdis Holmeset, Norway coach: „It was a very close match. The Koreans played very fast, and we wanted to keep up with them. Their goalkeeper played very well, she denied us a big number of chances. Fifteen minutes before the end, we started to lose power and just then we conceded the decisive goals. I am proud of this team, they proved that they belong to the best. “
Line Ellertsen, the best player of Norway: „In the beginning we controlled the game, we were able to show a number of great actions. But in the second half, our game was affected by pressure. We started losing the ball unnecessarily, and we lacked balance while finishing the attacks. “
Seong Ok Oh, the Republic of Korea coach: „We were eager to win bronze, we knew we could get it. It was important that we were always able to concentrate on the game. It is the first team I work in as a coach, so I am very happy with the bronze medals! “
Joeun Park, the best player of the Republic of Korea: „It’s fantastic! I feel like I am flying! The first half was difficult, our defensive game did not work. But we never gave up – I constantly repeated: We can do it, we can do it! „
